Originally released in 1970, the Minimoog Model D was the world's first portable synthesizer and served as a model for all electronic keyboards that followed. The all-analog instrument gained popularity by combining the huge sound of 1960s Moog modular synthesizers into a keyboard-style synthesizer that could be played without patch cables. The Minimoog Model D was adopted by the following artists such as Herbie Hancock, Kraftwerk, Rick Wakeman, Sun Ra, Piero Umiliani, Giorgio Moroder, Bernie Worrell and Gary Numan, all of whom created unique sounds of their own and created new genres of music with the instrument.
More than half a century after its invention, the Minimoog Model D is back in production at the Moog factory in Asheville, North Carolina. An extraordinary sonic tool and one of the most beloved and iconic synthesizers ever designed, it returns to everyone's reach and once again serves as inspiration for the next generation of electronic musicians.
The three-oscillator, monophonic, analog synthesizer is built in a local Appalachian cherry wood cabinet and hand-finished aluminum body. The synthesizer sounds deeper and more alive than ever, its legendary Ladder filter, powerful oscillators and rich saturating mixer retain the exact sound of the 1970s Minimoog Model D.
While no changes have been made to the original sound engine or audio signal path, the 2022 Minimoog Model D features a number of popular functional changes that expand the sonic capabilities of this legendary instrument. These modifications include a dedicated analog LFO with triangle and square waveforms, a state-of-the-art Fatar keyboard with touch volume detection and aftertouch available via the top panel CV jacks, built-in trim potentiometers, MIDI integration and mixer feedback modification that enables Minimoog Model D: n oversteer and "squeal". by turning the knob. And for the first time in its history, the Minimoog Model D now has a spring-loaded pitch wheel, allowing for better playability.
